Lessons in Leadership: Insights from Jessica Rains, Director of Customer Success & Marketing at OutcomeMD

Updated: Jan 7

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. As the Director of Customer Success & Marketing at OutcomeMD, I have had the privilege of wearing many hats and learning from a diverse range of experiences. These experiences have shaped my approach to leadership and taught me valuable lessons that I believe can inspire others on their own journeys. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way:

1. Empathy is the Cornerstone of Leadership

At its core, leadership is about people. Understanding what motivates individuals, acknowledging their challenges, and celebrating their successes requires genuine empathy. At OutcomeMD, I’ve seen firsthand how taking the time to listen—really listen—can transform team dynamics and create an environment where everyone feels valued.

2. The Power of Vulnerability

Leaders often feel the need to have all the answers, but true strength lies in vulnerability. Admitting when you don’t know something or when you’ve made a mistake fosters trust and encourages a culture of openness. It’s okay to be human; in fact, it’s essential.

3. Success is a Team Sport

No leader achieves success alone. Collaboration, trust, and a shared vision are the foundation of any thriving team. I’ve learned to surround myself with people who challenge me, complement my strengths, and share my commitment to excellence.

4. Adaptability is Non-Negotiable

In the fast-paced world of healthcare technology, change is constant. Whether it’s navigating new regulations, adopting innovative solutions, or responding to shifting customer needs, adaptability is key. Leaders who embrace change and inspire their teams to do the same will always find a way to move forward.

5. Lead with Purpose

Purpose-driven leadership is about aligning your team’s goals with a mission that resonates on a deeper level. At OutcomeMD, our mission to improve healthcare through patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provides a clear sense of purpose that drives everything we do. This clarity keeps us focused and motivated, even in challenging times.

6. Celebrate the Wins, Big and Small

Acknowledging achievements—whether it’s a major milestone or a small victory—builds morale and reinforces positive behaviors. Celebrating these moments reminds teams of their collective impact and inspires continued dedication.

7. Continuous Learning is Essential

Leadership is not static; it’s a lifelong journey of growth. I’ve learned to seek out opportunities for learning, whether through mentorship, reading, or engaging with thought leaders in my field. Staying curious and open to new ideas ensures that I’m always evolving as a leader.

8. Leave a Legacy of Empowerment

The mark of a great leader isn’t just the impact they have during their tenure, but the legacy they leave behind. Empowering others to lead, grow, and innovate creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond your own contributions.

As we continue to navigate an ever-changing world, these lessons serve as my compass. Leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I am grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow every day. For those aspiring to lead, I encourage you to embrace the journey, remain authentic, and always lead with heart and purpose.
